Procol Harum, "A Whiter Shade of Pale"
Transcription and Fingering: Renato Bellucci
A Whiter Shade of Pale is without any doubt one of the most emblematic pieces of the 70s. It is inspired in the "Air on the G String" by Bach and just like the piece it is inspired into, it delivers an equal amount of deep and amazingly beautiful melodic sequences. The jazzy spirit I used in the transcription is marked by an ever changing syncopation in the rhythm. Keeping the tuning of the guitar to the standard E was perhaps the biggest challenge in making the transcription because most of the work I found online demanded some sort of detuning and I always try to avoid changing the standard tuning of the guitar in order to keep the resonant characteristics of the instrument intact. I am very proud of the work and I share it here with all my online students and friends.

The opening notes set the tone of "Whiter Shade of Pale" right from the start and the interpreter can feel the"presence" of Bach's Air embedded in the main theme. It is essential that you keep the main melody in center stage and be extremely consistent with the right hand fingering. This will ensure a perfect rendition of the work. The left hand used finger 3 stopping the D# as a lever onto which the weight of the hand is shifted and the fingers are presented precisely to do the work.
