Joseph Brooks, "You Light Up My Life"
Arranged & Fingered by Renato Bellucci
Renato Bellucci teaches the 1977 hit "You Light Up My Life". One beautiful song that made an impact when it was premiered in the 1977 movie with the same name. The song has been covered by countless stars since then and Whitney Houston version always stands out although I have not heard a single interpretation to date that I did not like wholeheartedly. Double stops is the main Challenge of the piece. Mostly these are performed by the thumb carrying the bass line voice and the a or m fingers played simultaneously to pluck the treble strings. Typically, the finger carrying the melody must be stiffened a little bit (Fijación. Read more on fijación in the technique pages).
Didi Conn performed the song majestically in the 1977 movie and her version is still one of the best.
Technique Highlights: Double Stops
In Double Stops, image above, The thumb "p" and the middle finger "m" make contact with the string (planting) and the attack follows. The m finger that carries the melody uses fijación in order to bring out the melody.
